Kabila Suspends SMS Indefinitely

The Congolese government earlier today ordered telecommunications companies to pull the plug on their SMS (texting) services, to preserve public order during the electoral count. The services will remain suspended until further notice.

Kabila spokesman Lambert Mende had earlier insisted that the government did not have anything to do with the SMS breakdown, suggesting it was the result of an overloaded system.

Today's announcement that the government had ordered the suspension is an indication that the Kabila regime has taken some of the lessons of the Arab Spring to heart--just not the lessons one might have hoped.
