More about Me

The son of an anthropologist, I grew up in Montreal (where my father taught at McGill), Nigeria, and Cote d'Ivoire. I spent a year after college living in a shanty town in eastern Zaire (in Kadutu, in Bukavu) on a Thomas Watson Fellowship, and later attended graduate school at the University of Florida, where I got an MFA in longform nonfiction and also did extensive class work in African studies. I wrote my thesis about daily life in the shanty town. I subsequently worked for a variety of think tanks and advocacy groups in DC.
