UN Formally Requests EU Troops

Le Soir reports that UN head Ban Ki-moon sent a formal request to the EU for troops to help end the ongoing conflict in the DRC. The EU troops would serve as a transitional force until the UN-mandated MONUC reinforcements arrive.

This is an enormously welcome development, as it appeared earlier this week that the prospect of the EU sending troops was dead.

The request from Ban Ki-moon arrived in the form of a letter sent yesterday to Javier Solana, the EU's chief of foreign affairs, according to Karel de Gucht, Belgium's foreign minister. The request will be considered at an EU meeting in Brussels on Monday.
